The METALBIO Network (Metals and Metal Ions in Biological Systems) is a collaborative research initiative dedicated to exploring the roles and potential applications of metal ions and complexes in biologically relevant processes. Established in 2015 and subsequently expanded, METALBIO now brings together 13 research groups across Spain. It covers diverse interdisciplinary areas such as bioinorganic chemistry, coordination chemistry, nanomaterials, and therapeutic systems, with support from the AEI and Spain's Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades under the RED2022-134091-T project.

The network is committed to advancing innovation in fields like drug development, diagnostics, therapeutic delivery systems, and the study of interactions between metals and biomolecules, while pushing the boundaries of synthetic therapeutic system applications in biology.

METALBIO's core mission is to promote collaboration among researchers, driving progress across five main research areas: therapeutic metal complexes, diagnostic metal-based agents, functional nanomaterials, theoretical studies of molecular interactions, and the biological evaluation of these systems in vitro and in vivo.

This comprehensive approach aims to address pressing health issues, including cancer, bacterial infections, diabetes, and neurodegenerative disorders, while aligning with global initiatives such as the European Union's Horizon Europe "Health" cluster.

The symposium "The Role of Metal Ions in Biological Systems: Final Meeting of the Spanish METALBIO Network" is a premier event highlighting the groundbreaking discoveries and contributions of the METALBIO network. Taking place from April 23rd to 25th, 2025, in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, this symposium will showcase the remarkable progress made in recent times in the study of metal ions in biological systems.

Join us as leading researchers from the METALBIO network, together with distinguished international experts in the field, come together to present cutting-edge findings and engage in insightful discussions. This is an invaluable opportunity to delve into the complex role of metal ions across a broad spectrum of biological processes, from cellular metabolism to their involvement in complex diseases.

This event is open to both members of the MetalBio Network and external participants who wish to present their research. Do not miss the opportunity to be part of the final gathering of this transformative scientific journey.
